This article will talk about different types of processor types, Such as Socket 370, Slot 1, etc. 

CPU Connectors
---------------

Socket 370

This was the first way CPU's were made, it was very heat efficient, 
and small, It has a few different names I can think of, such as PPGA 
Which is what Intel's first Socket 370 celerons were called, it stands 
for Plastic Pin Grid Array.  Another is Socket 7, Ive heard Intel 
Pentium/Pentium Pro's called this, along with the AMD K5 and K6.  
The new one, which is different, but still socket 370 is called FCPGA, 
which is only found in the new Intel Pentium 3's, and the net Intel 
Celeron 2's.  The Socket 370 Design is about as big as the ascii art below.  
The construction is the processor core, on an array of pins, all stickin out 
perpendicular to the CPU itself.  The array of pin's stick into an equal 
amount of holes in the socket on the motherboard.  Socket 370 CPU's can be 
put into a Slot 1 motherboard when using a "Slotket" which is a card about 
the size of a Slot 1 CPU that converts the Socket 370 into a Slot 1.

Slot 1
-------

This is the new design for CPU's, almost all new CPU's are in this design, 
it is split up into 3 categories, SECC or Single Edge Contact Cartridge, 
SECC-2 Single Edge Contact Cartridge Revision 2, and SEPP or Single Edge 
Processor Package.  Slot 1 CPU's use an SC242 Connector.  The AMD Athlon 
uses a "Slot A" connector, but they are basically the same.

SECC

This format was first introduced with the Intel Pentium II.  It trapped heat, 
causing CPU overheating, and also required more voltage for the CPU.  
Examples of this are early Intel Pentium II's, Intel Pentium II Xeon and 
The AMD Athlon(A.K.A. The AMD K-7).  It was designed to keep the CPU core 
from being damaged.

Intel Pentium II 233-300MHz
Intel Pentium II Xeon
AMD Athlon (K7)

SECC-2

This was the revision of the SECC Theory, it is somewhat more heat efficient 
than SECC, but still far from the efficiency of the "Primitave" Socket 370.  
This is found on all but the FCPGA Intel Pentium 3's, and In some Pentium 2 
300MHz's, and 333MHz Intel Pentium 2's and up.

All Intel Pentium III's except FCPGA

SEPP

This is only found in the discontinued Intel Slot 1 Celeron's.  The CPU was not 
incased in any plastic, and was just the bare circuitry.  This was far more heat 
efficient than the SECC/SECC-2 theory, but still not as good as socket 370.
