Voltage spreaders are devices designed to keep the off hook voltage of a phone sufficiently low so that voltage-sensing tape recorders will not activate. Voltage spreaders are often marketed as devices that "prevent interuption of modem traffic".

Note: Voltage spreaders are ineffective against voice activated tape recorders.
