Summer:  Summer 2002 went in a totally different direction.

This cover showed a view of Manhattan from above, specifically the part of Manhattan that encompassed the Hotel Pennsylvania where the H2K2 conference was set to take place in July.

Not only were the colors distorted to make the whole thing look like an integrated circuit board, but there were green and red circles throughout the entire picture.

In a rare departure from how the covers were usually presented, an article in the issue explained the image, which was basically a scan of Wi-Fi networks in the area.

Over the course of 90 minutes, 448 networks were discovered, only 26 percent of which had encryption enabled.  Thus, the cover also served as a security warning.
