Hi group!
Many of us have had to hire and employ number of technical and engineering
staff over the years.
To train a technicians and create a right mindset for quality craftmanship
is a daunting task sometimes, so I thought about asking if any of you could
find a time to share in the group some experience and tips'n'tricks for how
you have "broken in" the technical people newly working for you?
What do you think is the most vital part of the training you think you have
had to give to (all) your people?
What extra-curriculum and teambuilding activities you have found working
best for getting a right mindset developed?
What kind of tutoring you have used for teaching your technicians how to
neither under-do nor over-do a task in hand?
Of course, it always starts from choosing the right people in a first
place, but lets assume for a moment, that the right people are already
chosen.
As a background, I have been working as CTO and engineering manager for
almost 20 years (electronics and ICT), dealing with these very same
questions on a daily basis. I am now hired for a temporary engineering
manager at a small company what has technical staff in place, but what has
hardly ever been run by anyone working as engineering manager before, so it
is a more or less "homegrown" venture today.
I will have to introduce the "ancient and accepted" culture and procedures
here what are industry standard worldwide, but given a total greenfield to
work at, I am tempted to push it a little further, so if anybody is willing
to share some ideas, could be very helpful and interesting!
Best Regards,
Andrus.
