For correlation someting like 2 dtmf tones that switch every 5-10
seconds works very well. Easy to create with any audio package, then
record onto CD/mp3 and play around the area. If you want to be more
covert use a radio station, not quite as good but will do the job.
If you can, utilising the buildings PA system to folld the building
with your source is great.
Vacumb cleaner (grey noise) sounds like a confusion between 'known
sound source' and 'sound masking'.
