Actually, no GPS necessary. The OBDII specification does not include an
odometer in the standard, but many cars have the data accessible in a
vendor-specific address and there is a spec with suggested address.

There is a way, though, a readout of the miles driven since MIL
(Malfunction Indicator Lamp?) reset. That is a directly available
surrogate value.

Another possible way is integrating time and speed.
