Everybody has a different way of doing sweeps, but on outside
"live"
lines I have had very good experience with the CopperPro/990 as it
lets you manipulate the DSLAM at the central office, and you can
shoot two lines at the same time, download the traces and data to a
laptop or palm sized machine, and can print all kinds of sexy
hard-copy reports.

The Riser-Bond Model 6000 is also a real winner, but it lacks the
capability to manipulate the DSL, will not flag the locations of
bridge taps, and will not automatically locate high impedance devices
like the CopperPro does.
With a CopperPro, a TS100 numeric TDR, a TS44 Butt Set, a 289 Digital
Voltmeter, a CMA-100 Audio Amp, and a Kaiser SCD-5 Subcarrier receiver
you
can find most phone bugs and wiretaps. Extra points if you want to
add a laptop and printer (or PDA and printer), and a good hand-held
scope such as the ScopeMeter 199. You can fit all of this equipment
(except the laptop and printer) into a single carry-on sized roller
case with other telephone tools, with the laptop and printer in an
appropriate laptop satchel or briefcase that goes over the handles of
the roller case.
This is just for "shooting the lines", not checking for
radiating RF
where you would want to use a CPM-700 system and spectrum analyzer
(although the Fluke 199 can be used in a spectrum analyzer/FFT mode)
to sniff for RF. Usually, you would check for RF first with one set
of tools, and then shoot the lines with another set of
equipment.
It is important that you have the ability to actually create
hard-copy versions of your measurements while still on the jobsite,
and you can create these measurements either by directly connecting
the printer to the instrument, or connect the instrument to a laptop,
suck the data from the instrument to the laptop, and then print the
report from the laptop and not directly from the instrument
itself.
