Subject: Re: [TSCM-L] {4915} STU III and Fortezza now Verboten
Is that "2005 white paper" and its 2009 update publicly available? Perhaps
they could be sent to the TSCM-L list for our edification.
The article below states, "The federal government=92s standard for secure f=
ax
capability changed dramatically in December 2009, when the longtime
standard STU III secure telephone and the KOV-14 Fortezza card were no
longer permitted."
No longer permitted by whom? For what purposes? Are entities who are "no
longer permitted" to use these COMSEC devices now surplusing them? Can
private parties without clearance purchase and possess them?
Perhaps I'll see a bunch of then at the Dayton Hamvention flea market this
year. I've seen surplused STU-III's for sale there before.

The STU-III's and KOV-14 have an impressive weakness that was the=20
subject of a 2005 white paper, and the paper was just updated this last=20
summer.
The STU's and STE's do not need to be abandoned, just checked a whole=20
lot better.
I think the comment was something like "they found how many bugs?" was=20
spoken to by a major political leader when they were formally informed=20
about the issue when it first emerged in 2005 in a white paper that=20
blind-sided people within the government who claimed that the equipment=20
was bullet proof.
Could be related.
