There is a slight wrinkle though in all of this.
The U.S. State Department (PM/DDTC, high folks) states that the Kestrel
software was written by the same company that make the Signal Hound
Receiver, and they they programmed the software at the request of the
company in Canada, but that they did not have the legally required
license to allow then to do the programming on behalf of a non-U.S.
Citizen.
Because the Kestrel software is considered by both the U.S. and
Canadian government to be "Arms" the lack of a proper license to
undertake the development of the software for a foreign entity is
ahem, "a serious problem" as the software is considered by law to be
"munitions" then each copy distributed out of Canada is an individual
violation of both Canadian and U.S. law.
If the software then come back into the United States a triple and quad
violation of the law takes place, whereby the company in Canada is
required to get permission to ship it from Canada back to the United
States to retail sale, and the purchaser in the United States is
required to get a license to import the "Arms" that this software
represents.
So a copy of this software in the United Stated, obtained from Canada
represents potentially four separate U.S. Federal felonies for each
copy. I seem to recall that each offense if something like ten years in
prison, so someone could be looking at 40 years in prison for
possessing one copy of the software.
On yes, one other little tidbit, under U.S. Law, Arms Smuggling is an
offense under the U.S. Patriot Act, and it is considered by law to me a
predicate act of the act of terrorism, so when you bring this software
in, just keep in mind that the U.S. Government will have just branded
you both as an arm smuggler, and an a terrorism suspect and well...
they can use that fact to snoop though your underwear, and probe you
neither regions.
Do not smuggle TSCM gear, and if you have ANY questions at all about
any of this I would invite you to contact the U.S. State Department,
ITAR enforcement or PM/DDTC office and query then as to the weather
conditions on an island about 200 miles South of Miami, just a short
jump South from the Florida Keys.
Please, let me say again, DO NOT SMUGGLE THIS EQUIPMENT. You can not
get it across any U.S. or Canadian border unless you break the law, or
you have a very important license for the transaction from the U.S.
State Department, and also from the Canadian Government.
Look, if you are in the United States, just use the software that is
FREE and which already come with the signal hound, it is essentially
the same things a KESTRAL, and the company that did the software for
Paul merely added a few bells and whistles to the FREE software that
already comes with the product (I have direct personal knowledge of the
development of the software).
So, remind me why you would want to pay extra money for something that
is already FREE, and potentially get yourself twisted up an an arm
smuggling issue?
The Signal Hound is a great product, and I strongly recommend it, but
folks, there is no reason to buy it expect from the company that
actually makes it, and who will give you the software actually for FREE.
Notice how many times I used the word "FREE" in the above, it should
tell you something.
Labview also controls all of the Anritsu spectrum analyzers, and
Anristu will give you a demo copy for free when you purchase their
equipment, and they have some pretty cool TSCM functions build it
(thanks to guess who), plus the software that does the TSCM activities
is actually built in to the analysers so that you need to external
controllers of any sort.
FREE is always good.

Here is the link http://www.kestreltscm.com/SISS002.htm
I use the signal hound receiver with the software. There are multiple
affordable receivers for the software.
Today they released this statement below.
The Kestrel TSCM TM Professional Software Provides full advanced
operational support and control of the the MS2722C (9kHz to 9 GHz),
MS2723C (9 kHz to 13 GHz), MS2724C (9 kHz to 20 GHz), MS2725C (9 kHz
to 32 GHz), and the MS2726C (9 kHz to 43 kHz) professional series
portable handheld spectrum analyzers.

Yes I am using Kestrel and have done the training. It is highly
recommended. It is not motion detection software. It is legit sweep
software designed specifically for sweeps and signal analysis.
