I have a service that I provide to clients where=20
i go out to their site, and in their presence=20
open a "to-be-sterilized" hard-drive, spin up the=20
drive, and then apply a carbide bit to the drive=20
and slowly drag the bit over the face of the=20
drive thus removing all magnetic materials from=20
the platter. I then make a second pass with a=20
mild abrasive pad to remove any remaining=20
material from the platter. If the client of so=20
interested I can then reassemble the drive and=20
clean the powder so that the data "just=20
disappeared" but most customers just toss the=20
carcasses into the dumpster. I used to totally=20
remove the platters, but found excellent results=20
by merely spinning up the drive with an external=20
motor and applying a carbide bit.
I also have a portable shredder that is capable=20
of eating CD ROM and DVD's, or SIM cards, and=20
laying waste to floppies so I can make fairly=20
short work of most computer media that the=20
executive needs to make go away. I prefer to put=20
the DVD's and CD's into a microwave oven to=20
blister them before destruction by grinding.
Thumb drives are a little trickier as you have to=20
open the housing, remove the PCB, remove the=20
memory chip, and crush it across the IC die but=20
make sure fracture the die, but just pop it off=20
the epoxy. Just shredding the PCB is a risk=20
because the chip may not sustain sufficient damage.
If the client is so moved I can then take what=20
remains of the platters out to the parking lot=20
and apply a little heat to reduce the platter to molten slag.
