It is still a common test for any situation where you can not access
both ends of the wire and have to shoot from only one end.

You can use it on PBX lines or Ethernet cables as well as POTS with
some modifications, but any test that you can apply to a wire which
has a probability of detecting a breach of of great value.

Do not put a lot of faith in only a single test, or in only a single
piece of equipment; but rather use a multitude of tests, performed
with multiple pieces of equipment.
