Another small tale: when I was at MIT in
the 1960s, the dorm phone system was naturally
a local creation and a marvel of cleverness
and ancient Strowger switches. Given this
discussion of eavesdropping, and the setting
of MIT, perhaps you can guess why hanging
around the switch on weekend nights was a
past-time for the privileged few. (Yes,
the microphone could be turned on with the
phone still on-hook.)
