Folks,
Naturalists have the problem of "How many frogs are there
in this pond?" and they solve it one of two ways -- so-called
capture/re-capture and so-called capture for removal. In no
way meaning to toot my own horn, but see slides #278 - #284
in this item:

Population estimiation is a well developed art in field
biology. The methodologic value here might be rather
slight in that the bugs (frogs) don't wander about to
new locations, etc., but the last ten or so years have
seen quite a blossoming of techniques for estimating
non-countable populations so, perhaps, there is
something here to use for the bug finding problem.
I'll do some digging if it is of interest and someone
else doesn't already know the answer(s).
