British tabloid suspends editor for eavesdropping

London, Aug 11: A British tabloid has suspended its royal editor, the
paper said on Friday, after he was charged with conspiring to
intercept phone messages as part of a police investigation into
allegations of eavesdropping on officials working for Prince Charles.

In a statement, the News of the World said Clive Goodman, 48, will
remain suspended pending the outcome of the police inquiry.

Goodman and Glenn Mulcaire, 35, are due in court on August 16 to face
charges of conspiring to intercept voicemail messages and
intercepting voicemail messages.

The pair were arrested on Tuesday and charged the following day. An
unidentified 50-year-old man was also detained, but police later
released him without charge.

Police said their seven-month investigation began with complaints
from the Prince's Clarence house office about intercepted messages.
Authorities say the investigation has gone beyond the office to
include other public figures -- though police have not provided specifics.

They say the phone intercepts may have compromised security around
some public figures.

Anti-terrorism officers are leading the investigation, and police say
they are working with phone companies in an effort to identify all
those whose conversations were intercepted.

Charles' office declined to comment on Goodman's suspension.
