Ashcroft would likely offer the rebuttal that he did not know what he
was doing when he argues with Comey due to the after effects of the
drugs they gave him for the surgery, or he was beginning to sense his
own mortality and had a slip of conscience after a lapse in his
health required surgical intervention.
