I also have to work within the time the client allows me to access the premises.

Sometimes you can only get into an office for one, single 16 hour session as the office is only available for a very narrow, single shot, and other times you can spend 3-4 days inside a room.

With some customers you can come rolling in with six TSCM people and thousand of pounds of equipment and then running 2 or more people in the office 24 hours a day for an entire week, but in other cases the client can only get a single person in with a couple of briefcases.

Know your client
Know his threat
Know your equipment
Know your own weaknesses and strengths
Know bugging equipment
Know the eavesdropper
Know the laws of physics
Work within the time you are given
Work with what equipment you have
Cover all the bases, overlap all coverage and equipment
Miss nothing
Keep your clients secrets

Also remembering that 70% of 'spy' equipment is bought over the internet. Know how that gear works and WHERE that gear works is a big help.
Something the client may have no knowledge of, thinking that 70% of the gear is 'spook' hand built equipment.

I use science to develop my gut feeling, and then take by initial gut feeling and perform more scientific testing to let the feeling evolve into a professional opinion and form tangible evidence and measurements of why I feel the way that I do, and prepare to show my client tangible things that they can see and understand.

If a client tells me that tier neighbor has installed a 2.4 GHz video camera in their bedroom I will hard-copy the entire spectrum from 30 Hz to 26.5 GHz passively from outside the bedroom, then I will generate the "ALL ON" commands while monitoring 1.9 to 2.7 GHz, and have the SA hard-copy and save anything that crosses the threshold. If nothing is found at that point i perform an careful and extensive physical search on the room in question, including disassembling everything that could conceal a camera or which has commonly been used in the past for camera concealments.

Not only will I have hundreds of pages of spectrum analyzer printouts, but I will have several rolls of large chart recorder outputs from the diode detectors (to catch 100% of anything that bursts or is digital), and then photographs of the inside of the televisions, cable boxes, clock radios, insides of HVAC ducts and grills, dismantled clocks and so on.

I still use gut instinct on sweeps, but I still have to back it up with tangible measurements.

not feelings, but SCIENCE.

Experience and intuition equals or surpasses science.  You can use science to prove or disprove
 your "gut" feeling.

Ducking for cover.
