I use science to develop my gut feeling, and then take by initial gut
feeling and perform more scientific testing to let the feeling evolve
into a professional opinion and form tangible evidence and
measurements of why I feel the way that I do, and prepare to show my
client tangible things that they can see and understand.

If a client tells me that tier neighbor has installed a 2.4 GHz video
camera in their bedroom I will hard-copy the entire spectrum from 30
Hz to 26.5 GHz passively from outside the bedroom, then I will
generate the "ALL ON" commands while monitoring 1.9 to 2.7 GHz, and
have the SA hard-copy and save anything that crosses the threshold.
If nothing is found at that point i perform an careful and extensive
physical search on the room in question, including disassembling
everything that could conceal a camera or which has commonly been
used in the past for camera concealments.

Not only will I have hundreds of pages of spectrum analyzer
printouts, but I will have several rolls of large chart recorder
outputs from the diode detectors (to catch 100% of anything that
bursts or is digital), and then photographs of the inside of the
televisions, cable boxes, clock radios, insides of HVAC ducts and
grills, dismantled clocks and so on.

I still use gut instinct on sweeps, but I still have to back it up
with tangible measurements.
