And if no one is paying attention but someone does a frequency sweep
they will know the frequency its tuned to (because as soon as they hit a
carrier on the given freq it goes silent - this can be done at night
when no one is around).
They can then transmit known predictable noise instead of random and
filter it, or if no one is really paying attention just transmit a good
clean carrier that causes it to go silent on demand.
And what do you mean there is no ducts in good scifi? I cant tell you
the number of movies I have seen where very large men with bulky weapons
are crawling through the ducts almost upright searching for something :P
