Was Diana bugged by Charles in bed?
'Mystery signal found'
By Adrian Shaw 08/01/2008
Princess Diana may have been bugged in bed by a device in Prince
Charles's room as their turbulent marriage crumbled, her inquest
heard yesterday.
It also emerged that the princess's lover, heart surgeon Hasnat Khan,
47, could break his silence and give evidence about their two-year affair.
Diana called in electronics expert Grahame Harding to sweep her
apartments at Kensington Palace four times in 1994, the jury was told.
She told him she believed "dark forces" were at work. Mr Harding
said: "One day my equipment detected an electronic signal indicating
that a possible bugging device may have been behind a wall in her bedroom.
"I don't know what was on the other side of the wall. I believe
there was another room off the bedroom, used by the Prince of Wales."
Mr Harding said Diana told him she feared her talks were bugged.
Asked if she said who she suspected, he replied: "No.
"She said 'There are dark forces'. She did not expand in any way."
Mr Harding admitted there could have been an innocent explanation for
the "bugging" signal.
But he added: "Whatever it was, it was similar to a transmitting device."
Former protection officer Colin Trimming said Diana was increasingly
concerned her car and phone were bugged.
He said she claimed: "Even when no one knows where I'm going, there
are people waiting for me at the other end."
Mr Khan, described as the "real love" of Diana's life, lives in
Pakistan. He cannot be compelled to give evidence to the London
hearing. But he may testify via videolink or through a written statement.
His evidence could be crucial as to whether Diana intended to marry
Dodi Fayed, as claimed by Dodi's father Harrods boss Mohamed al Fayed.
Yesterday, Diana's close friend Robert Turner claimed she told him
her affair with Dodi was over two weeks BEFORE the couple died in a
Paris car crash in August 1997. He said: "She said 'It's all over.'"
The hearing also heard police guard Sgt Barry Mannakee was "moved
sideways" because he was "over-familiar" with Diana. The inquest continues.
