IBM develops 'reasoning' computer chip=20

ARMONK, N.Y. (UPI) -- IBM says it has created a computer chip that can mimi=
c the human brain in its ability to learn through experiencing its surround=
ings.=20

The company said Thursday the experimental chip will let a new generation o=
f computers, called "cognitive computers," understand their surroundings an=
d act on things that happen around them, CNN reported.=20

The prototype chip could allow computers to "reason" instead of reacting so=
lely to pre-programmed instructions, IBM said.=20

"Imagine traffic lights that can integrate sights, sounds and smells and fl=
ag unsafe intersections before disaster happens," said project leader Dharm=
endra Modha.=20

"Or imagine cognitive co-processors that turn servers, laptops, tablets and=
 phones into machines that can interact better with their environments."=20

"The computers we have today are more like calculators," Modha told tech bl=
og VentureBeat. "We want to make something like the brain. It is a sharp de=
parture from the past."=20
