Below Slab Wiring

One of the cute methods used by the eavesdropper is to gain access to
the inside of an executives office for just long enough to pull the
baseboard moulding back, and drill a 1/4th hole into the slab. The
eavesdropper then uses a vacuum (ie: shop vac) or uses a vacuum
bottle to excavate a cavity directly below the "air hole". They then
insert a microphone and pigtail into the cavity, and epoxy the hole
in the concrete to lock in the microphone. With the molding replaced
the modification is essentially invisible. The pigtail is long enough
to reach the outside of the building and clear the foundation. The
spy then excavates a pit on the outside of the building, and using
something akin to a small shop vac excavates a tunnel towards the
cavity they formed under the microphone. Once the cavity is reached
the spy either grabs the foam on the end of the pigtail to bring it
outside the building, or fishes for the pigtail with a long
endoscope. The spy then attaches their recording device or repeater
to the wires and reap the clean audio. The spy only needs 10-15
minutes inside the building to drill the concrete, form the cavity,
and then install the microphone and close everything back up.

If the area you are inspecting is on the ground floor, do not
automatically assume that the slab is secure, and check the baseboard
trim and sheet rock for any anomalies, marks, or deformation. Then
once you have checked everything INSIDE the building be sure to
eyeball the outside of the building. Pay close attention to any
irrigation system component that is anywhere near the area of
interest (hint: it may not below there).
