LPD BUGGING INDICTMENTS: Officers to be Arraigned Next Week
Next week, four former members of the Lafayette Police Department,
including former Chief Randy Hundley will be formally arraigned in
district court.
For those four, it's just the next step in the criminal process that
will lead to either a plea bargain agreement or a trial.
But, for the men and women who still wear the badge, it's not only an
embarrassment, it's a continuing liability.
When Lafayette police Chief Randy Hundley and four other members of
his department turned in their badges, it sent a series of shock
waves reverberating through the department that have still yet to subside.
Interim police Chief Jim Craft has said as much.
Craft says it effects the police department as a whole and he thinks
everyone will be glad when it's over.
While it's important to remember that one of the five, former Major
Casey Fowler was not indicted, his decision to leave the department,
along with the other four, still dealt a serious blow to the
department's senior staff, forcing Chief Craft to reshuffle some
members of the department.
At full strength, the department has 240 authorized positions.
But, the department is not at full strength.
In addition to four officers who are currently serving with the
National Guard, the department has 25 vacancies.
But, the real concern is brain drain.
One-third of the department, some 80 men and women, are now qualified
to retire.
And, given the current atmosphere that exists, there are real
concerns a number of the city's most experienced officers may opt to
get out and look for greener pastures.
And, to what extent the department's recruiting efforts are being
impacted, one can only guess.
One of the more visible members of the department has called it quits.
Officer Jennifer Taylor has left the department to pursue a full-time
career in teaching at the university level.
Prior to the shake up, Officer Taylor had served the department as an
instructor.
