On the upper side coverage to at least 40 GHz is critical, and if you
can get up to 43-45 GHz in a simple chassis so much the better.

The ability to use external preselected mixers is quite valuable so that
you can keep the weight of the primary unit way down while keep
sensitivity way up and if you can integrate the preselected mixer right
into a 360 degree reflector/cone you will miss almost nothing.

A very good preselected mixer will use a preamplifier that provides a
detector output for indicating saturation, and by charting this output
over time nothing on the spectrum can hide, so that even with the
spectrum analyser is not right on the frequency the signal still gets
detected.
