Queched Magnets

I have a contact who is in the business of emergency repairs to
cryogenic magnets such as those used in MRI's and other analytical
instrument based on magnetic resonance, or requiring intense magnetic fields.

Their service trucks are on stand-by 24 hours a day, 7 days per week
and they position their staging points so that that can arrive at any
of their clients location inside a 50 mile radius with a four man
quench crew within a mere matter of hours.

When you have huge cryogenic magnet (such as an MRI) there will be
times where through some emergency action or error you have to purge
the cryogenic helium, nitrogen, etc. You then have to have in a
specialized team to repressurize the cryogenic change once the case
or the quench is resolved.

This company sends out a four man team (2x PhD, 2x Masters), and
charges $1500 per hour, per person or $6000 per hour for the team.
Once they are given the all clear that a cryogenic vessel is safe and
they start to recharge and recommission the magnet they then charge
12-30 billable hours person on site, so the fee ranges from 72k to
180k, plus the cost of the materials.

The point is, if you work out the math they expend an average of 84
man hours (4 man team times 21 hours on-site),and on average a
billing for a single day of $126,000. One person can perform the
service, but owners of these magnets loose thousands of dollars, and
sometimes tens of thousands of dollars when this things so down, so
customers want the magnet back up ASAP, and they are more then happy
to pay a team of well trained and well equipped experts to render a
critical technical service.

Sweeps can follow the same lines where a customer needs a small team
of highly skilled people to perform a highly specialized service on
an emergency basis... AND they are willing to pay wht you are
worth... if you are really worth it.

Just something to ponder
