Dry Ice Hat Trick

Here is another one of my dry ice hat tricks, which lets you use a
CPM-700 for thermal imaging (technically, thermal "visualization).

Obtain a large Coleman or Igloo cooler at Wal-Mart, you will need
one that is at least 50 quarts. I like the stainless steel Coleman 54
quart unit as it is easy for one man to handle by himself, while the
large units require two people.

Add 2 inches of extruded poly foam so that the dry ice you put in the
cooler does not come into contact with the plastic of the cooler, or
the inside of the cooler..

Add bags of pelletized dry ice into the cooler, and arrange the bags
on thier size so that you can put something you want to inspect into
the cooler, on one set of bags, and then lay two bags on top of the
thing you would like to inspect (an executives telephone, or suspect
clock radio for example). Wait for a few seconds so that the outside
of the item cools down, but not the inside.

Then use a CPM-700 infra-red probe to map out "hot spots" on the
surface of the item you are inspecting.

You can also use a small blower to ducts frigid air against a wall
(from a cooler), and then use the CPM-700 IR probe to quickly sweep
behind the chilled air to detetct wall studs, joints int he sheet
rock, wires inside the wall, and pretty much anything insid the wall
that is creating heat.

The equipment may be a little primitive, but with the proper
technique you will be stunned at what you can visualize with a
CPM-700 IR probe.
