Ex-Deputy Pleads to Bugging Ark. Home
The Associated Press
Wednesday, July 11, 2007; 11:32 AM
MOUNTAIN HOME, Ark. -- A former sheriff's deputy who bugged his
upstairs neighbor's apartment pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor
harassment charge and will serve one day in jail.
The listening device was discovered April 1 when the neighbor felt
something under the carpet and found a microphone. Authorities found
four holes in the ceiling of the deputy's apartment below.
David Paul, 35, was fired by Baxter County that night.
He will serve one day in jail, pay a $1,000 fine and perform 20 days'
community service for the harassment plea entered Tuesday. A criminal
mischief charge was dropped because he said he paid the apartment
owner $600 to cover the damage he did.
Paul also was ordered to have no contact with the victim, the
victim's husband or the victim's child for one year.
Mountain Home City Attorney Roger Morgan said Paul never gave "a
clear-cut reason" for planting the electronic listening device,
though he said there may have been problems between the families.
Morgan said the microphone, the type used on a personal computer, as
not very sophisticated.
