Foreign Ministry checks security system at RI`s embassies
Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Foreign Affairs Ministry said it has
checked the security system at Indonesian representative offices
abroad on a regular basis with a view to prevent outsiders from
bugging activities.
"We have periodically checked Indonesian Embassies for security
reasons, as well as diplomats and staff, documents, communication
system and others," Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesman, Desra Percaya
said here on Friday.
He said that although there has been unusual indications, "we could
not make direct conclusions."
He made the remarks commenting on recent reports on bugging
activities at eight Indonesian Embassies.
"For instance, there was a `strange` case at one of our embassies.
But after an examination, we found out that the telephone
infrastructure there is already too old," he said.
However, he said, the ministry will maintain its alertness against
any possible bugging activity.
"The ministry had also taken steps to make sure the communication
system at the Indonesian embassies is safe to receive and send
information," he said.
The tapping issue was revealed by a member of parliament, Djoko
Susilo, after attending a closed-door meeting between the Commission
I of the House of Representatives and the Indonesian State Cipher
Institute (LSN) on July 17, 2006.
Susilo said there were eight Indonesian embassies which had been
bugged, namely those in Beijing (China), Tokyo (Japan), Seoul (South
Korea), Yangoon (Myanmar), Helsinki (Finland), Oslo (Norway),
Copenhagen (Denmark) dan Ottawa (Canada).
Previously, Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesman Desra Percaya
regretted the disclosure of the bugging issue by Djoko Susilo quoting
LSN`s investigation recently as it was a state secret which shouldn`t
have been revealed to the public.
Desra said the government would not bring the issue to the ASEAN
Ministerial Meeting (AMM) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, next week.
He said the problem relating to two countries could be solved through
bilateral settlement without involving ASEAN as regional organisation
had other more important agendas to be discussed.
Desra said the bugging issue was actually an old one which had been
in circulation since 2004 and what had been reported was actually
merely an indication of bugging.(*)
