Nagra miniature tape recorders were the gold=20
standard of electronic audio surveillance for=20
decades, and were/are highly prized. In the=20
1990's miniature digital recorders brought a=20
paradigm shift where superb mechanical=20
engineering was no longer required to design=20
covert audio recording devices. But Nagra still=20
has a niche in the security/spying market:=20

Stefan Kudelski, inventor of the Nagra, the first=20
portable professional sound recorder, has died aged 84.
Kudelski created the Nagra in 1951, an invention=20
which was used by the radio, film and television=20
industries, said the Kudelski Group, based in=20
Cheseaux-sur-Lausanne, western Switzerland, in a statement.
He began his career by selling the device to=20
Radio Luxembourg, Italy=92s RAI and the BBC, as=20
well as ABC, NBC and CBS in the United States.
=93Stefan Kudelski was one of those personalities=20
who contributed to the international reputation=20
of Switzerland,=94 the company=92s vice-chairman=20
Claude Smadja said in the statement.
=93Anyone who knew him could only be impressed by=20
his sharpness, his incredible culture, his=20
curiosity and his permanent sense of humour. =94
The Kudelski Group spun the Nagra audio unit off=20
in January 2012 and now focuses on technology for=20
digital television. It also owns a unit that=20
makes access systems for car parks and ski resorts.
The company has 2,900 full-time staff and in 2011=20
recorded sales of just under SFr900 million ($975 million).
Stefan Kudelski=92s son Andr=E9 is chairman and CEO,=20
having taken over from his father in 1991.=20
Marguerite Kudelski, Stefan=92s daughter, is also on the company=92s board.

=93Beautiful beasts=94
Kudelski was born in Warsaw in 1929. His family=20
fled Poland in 1939 at the beginning of the=20
Second World War, travelling to Hungary and=20
France before arriving in Switzerland in 1943.
He studied at the Swiss Federal Institute of=20
Technology in Lausanne (EPFL) and constructed his=20
first tape recorder there, as a student project.=20
The recorder was supposed to drive a machine=20
tool, but was good enough to record audio as well.
This was how one online gadget fan (see link)=20
described the invention: =93Nagras, rugged,=20
expensive and battery powered, are designed for=20
the chaotic, brutal world of location audio, so=20
one does not normally encounter one in the=20
studio. As such, most musicians rarely get an=20
opportunity to encounter one of these beautiful beasts.=94
In 1983, Kudelski entered the hall of fame of=20
motion picture and television by receiving the=20
John Grierson International Gold Medal, joining=20
luminaries of the Society of Motion Picture and=20
Television Engineers such as Louis Lumi=E8re,=20
Thomas Edison, Lee de Forest, George Eastman,=20
Walt Disney, Samuel Warner, L=E9on Gaumont, Ray Dolby and Vladimir Zworkyin=
.
In the course of his career, he was awarded=20
numerous distinctions including Oscars in 1965,=20
1977, 1978 and 1990 and Emmy Awards in 1984 and 1986.
The twitterverse was full of praise for Kudelski,=20
with most of the comments probably coming from=20
older journalists who remember carrying around the Nagra:
=93RIP to the man who revolutionised the world of sound recording,=94 _at_simo=
nsound.
=93RIP Stefan Kudelski, who built the most=20
beautiful tape recorders in the world,=94 _at_RadioMikeHill.
=93Not the most famous man in the world, but=20
someone who changed it in his own small way. RIP Mr Nagra,=94 _at_MickyCurling=
.
=93RIP Stefan Kudelski, inventor of the Nagra =96=20
undoubtedly the greatest recording device made,=94 _at_benegal.
=93Still use it here in Bengali films!=94 _at_PratimDGupta.
