The box has been used for more than a couple decades. The purpose is
accident reconstruction. It has a very short buffer, less than 30 seconds,
for which all active controls are monitored. There is no contained
transmitter, It requires a special wired interface to download this info t=
o
a laptop. It tells when the brakes were hit, the RPM, what gear, lights on
or off, etc.
The procedure for download involves usually tearing up the carpet somewhere
to find it.

Then there is wireless monitoring.
GM has Onstar and Ford has its own system, This system call query the car
for airbags, transmission, oil, tire pressure etc. All thing connected to
normal maintenance. GPS is accessed after a call is made by you.

To anyone=B9s knowledge that I have found, under normal operation.....
On star can not silently call the vehicle like an infinity transmitter. An=
y
call would produce a ring.

The call that unlocks the doors is isolated from the audio. The system that
lets them listem in after you ran into a tree, is a call out first
initiated by the onboard sensors.
