Not at all unusual, we find and decontaminate this stuff regularly. There are many flavors of this spyware.
Most are of either Russian, East European or Chinese origin. The next big advance in them will be rootkit-style ones.
The (US) gooberment had released quite a few so far that have been intercepted and analyzed. Once they have been, they are quite capable of being turned on the enemy.
Research: cryptovirology, kleptography

Cryptovirology is a field that studies how to use cryptography to design powerful malicious software. It encompasses overt attacks such as cryptoviral extortion where a cryptovirus, cryptoworm, or cryptotrojan hybrid encrypts the victim's files and the user must pay the malware author to receive the needed session key (that is encrypted under the author's public key that is contained in the malware).

This is only the tip of the iceberg.....M$ Vista is full of exploits, bet on it, and theres a $25,000 reward awaiting the first black-hat who comes up with an earth-shaking find.

Trust no one or anything you cant verify.
Its a far more dangerous world then the average person knows about.

Ex-employee undercut boss by bugging him

A 27-year-old man was able to beat his former boss to business deals after allegedly installing a sophisticated listening program in the shipowner's laptop computer, police said yesterday after arresting the suspect.

Officers were called in by the businessman after his former employee, a Ukrainian national, set up a rival shipping company and seemed to be one step ahead of him in closing deals.

After examining the unnamed entrepreneur's computer, officers discovered that spy software had been installed in the laptop which allegedly allowed the 27-year-old to automatically record any conversations made via the Internet.

Police found that the software, which the suspect allegedly devised on his own, also worked as a bug, recording voices even when the computer was switched off.
