Early in my career, I worked in academic medicine. The doctor
in charge of my lab was the best grantsman I ever met. When
writing a grant, he would find out who was serving on the
relevant study section and, with that list in his hand, put
in a flaw for each of them to find. His argument was that
the job of the study section was to find flaws, so he made
sure that each member would have one to find that made them
individually look smart. That way, the rest of the grant
would be left the hell alone.
If JMA was coming to dinner, I'd make sure there were sketchy
wire splices behind anything that could be unscrewed.
