If you are applying bias voltages or signals to a line, or are
shooting the line with a TDR, or using a toner or RF tracing... do
not under any conditions introduce any signal that is more them 1.3
volts in either polarity as you *** COULD *** fry the eavesdropping
device and thus render it un-detected. Yes, it may longer be
functional after you blast 12 volts into it, but it is also going to
be rel tricky to find after you blow out the diodes in it.
I strongly suggest that you start with a biasing signal or voltage
that does not exceed .3 volts, clear all your tests at this weak
voltage, and then repeat at no more then 1.3 volts, then 3 volts, 6,
12, 24, 48, 96, and so on being applied only after the prior weaker
voltage as cleared all tests. Also remember to slowly bias in both
polarities, and when possible apply as you TDR pulses as you bias
(secret technique). Bias first with DC, and then swept RF, and then
digital pulses, but please keep those bias voltages and signal
amplitudes down until you absolute need to crank them up to the next level.
Try to only use amplifiers, scopes, and couplers with a high
impedance setting as you may "pop" a device you are looking for
otherwise it you go poking around with 50 ohm test equipment.
