NSA chief: Opposition pol behind wiretapping
AN opposition leader has been wiretapping
administration officials for the past two months,
possibly including President Gloria Macapagal
Arroyo herself, using a very expensive “embedded”
spy gadget, according to National Security Adviser Norberto Gonzales.
He said the mastermind of the wiretapping was a “he.”
Gonzales, who flew to Washington over the weekend
to meet with United States top spook John
Negroponte, declined to name the opposition
leader, but he promised to unmask the man in three weeksÂ’ time.
“Kilala ninyo siya, kilala natin siyang lahat,”
(You know him, we all know him), he said. “Bigyan
nÂ’yo lang ako ng (Give me) three weeks, and we
will publicly identify him,” he added.
Gonzales confirmed that wiretappers had again
breached Malacañang security, but he declined to
say whether the President herself had been bugged again.
Last year, taped copies of a supposed phone
conversation between Mrs. Arroyo and former
Elections Commissioner Virgilio Garcillano came
out, triggering opposition claims that she had
cheated and calls for her to step down.
But Gonzales quickly exonerated Senator Panfilo
Lacson, who is said to have bought
state-of-the-art spying equipment recently from the United States.
“Every time there are reports of wiretapping, a
lot of people train their sights on Ping, But I
am telling you it’s not him,” Gonzales said.
“This person is from the opposition, but it is not Ping,” he added.
He described the wiretapper’s equipment as “very
modern, very expensive because even the AFP
[Armed Forces of the Philippines] does not have one like it.”
He said the gadget was “embedded” but did not
elaborate. In intelligence lingo, “embedded”
gadgets include microtransmitters woven into
dresses and listening devices tapping ordinary phone lines.
“We have gathered enough info to pin him down,”
he said. “He can remove his gadget if he reads
