Thief drives off with truck - and tracking device, FBI says

A thief who stole a tractor-trailer truck loaded with $4.8 million worth of
cell phones last month also stole a piece of high technology he did not
anticipate, police said.

The trailer was fitted with an electronic tracking device that let
investigators zero in on its location.

The case came to light Thursday with the indictment of Jose Perez-Garcia, 34,
of Memphis, in U.S. District Court at St. Louis on a theft-related charge.

Perez-Garcia was arrested with the truck at Eminence, Mo., just hours after it
was stolen in late February from a truck stop near Interstate 44 in Cuba, Mo.,
according to an FBI affidavit in the court file.

The vehicle, operated by Landstar Trucking Co., of Jacksonville, Fla., was
carrying a load of phones from a Motorola facility in Forth Worth, Texas, to
Plainfield, Ind., the U.S. attorney's office said. It was reported stolen at
about 8:30 p.m. Feb. 26 from the Voss Truck Port.

Using the tracking device, Landstar representatives located the trailer
traveling on Highway 19 near Eminence within two hours of the theft. The
message was related to Eminence City Marshal Jack Cox, who turned on his
warning lights and pulled over the truck as it was southbound on Highway 19,
the FBI said.

Cox then placed handcuffs on Perez-Garcia, who declined to comment but said,
"Take me to jail," the FBI document said.

Many trucking companies now use satellite tracking to manage their shipments.
It was not clear whether this device was for general business use or
specifically to protect the cargo.
