Hi-tech spying

Tuesday, June 20, 2006 05:04:57 pm

The ubiquitous cell phone - everyone has it, and some do more than
just talk into it. It can be used to take pictures, send email - and
even transfer documents from a computer.

But India's air warriors are worried...about espionage.

Two Air Force personnel have been caught spying, and they did it with
mobile phones.

Close calls

At Air Force Headquarters, New Delhi, an officer has been caught
transferring classified information from a computer to a mobile phone.

And at Halwara Air Force Base - in the Air Force's strategically
important western command, a junior staffer was nabbed providing
information to a Pakistani spy, again over his mobile phone.

The lesson out of these incidents is evidently this: New technology
can mean new threats. And a mobile phone can become a weapon, which
is why the Air Force is looking at a very strict mobile phone policy
for officers and their families.

"They (the two men caught spying) have both been dismissed from
service, and the Air Force is keeping a strict check. The policy on
mobile phones has been updated in May this year. Mobile phones with
camera and recording facilities are totally prohibited," said Air
Force spokesperson S M Sharma.

Mobile phones with recording facilities now a strict no-no among Air
Force personnel and their families

The Air Force is taking stringent measures, banning mobile phones
within security zones all over the country. Only specified officers
with clearance can carry them in these zones. Even family members of
Indian Air Force personnel have to give details of their phones and
their numbers.

However, "Authorised people are still using mobile phones (with
recording facilities), and all these numbers are with the Air Force,"
said Sharma.

All this, to stop further leaks. After policing the skies of India,
the Air Force seems to now be trying to police the airwaves in and
around its bases and buildings.
