ATHENS (Reuters) - The tapping of the prime minister's telephone,
those of several senior ministers and about 100 other high-profile
Greeks took advanced technology and a lot of money, the head of
Vodafone Greece said on Thursday.
Vodafone is at the heart of Greece's biggest phone tapping scandal,
in which unknown eavesdroppers listened in on about 100 mobile phones
for months around the time of the 2004 Athens Olympics.
"This required an organisation that combined advanced technology and
ample financial means," George Koronias, Vodafone Greece chief
executive officer, told a parliamentary committee investigating the case.
Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis and the foreign, defence and public
order ministers were among those whose mobile phones were tapped.
Using illegal software installed at Greece's second biggest mobile
phone operator, the unknown eavesdroppers could monitor scores of
mobile phones from June 2004 until March 2005.
Most of the wiretaps took place around the August 2004 Athens
Olympics -- the most guarded Games in history with a 1.2 billion euro
(825 million pounds) security budget.
The government went public with the case in February, almost a year
after it was informed by Vodafone, prompting questions of whether
foreign intelligence agents were behind the tappings.
The calls were being relayed to unknown destinations via four mobile
phone antennas in a zone in the centre of Athens that includes the
U.S. embassy.
The bugging stopped when Vodafone Greece, a subsidiary of British
firm Vodafone, discovered the software and removed it. Officials have
said that by shutting down the illegal software, Vodafone made it
impossible to trace the taps.
Koronias defended the company, saying once Vodafone discovered the
software, it removed it instantly to stop any further tappings.
"If the government wanted, it could have asked us to reactivate it to
monitor the tappings," Koronias said.
Pummelled for more than five hours with questions from deputies, some
of whom were victims of the taps, Koronias said that although his
company was not involved in the illegal act, he could not rule out
that insiders could have helped.
"The human factor from within Vodafone cannot be ruled out," he said.
Koronias will continue his testimony on Friday.
