Optical 1310 nm and 1550 nm interfaces are supported as well as electrical interfaces at all rates. A range of PDH rates from 140 Mb/s to 704 kb/s are also supported.
The measurement capability is configured using a modular architecture, allowing fully flexible configurations and full upgradeability - thus protecting your investment in test equipment. The instrument can be configured to simultaneously include PDH, SDH, ATM and jitter or it can be can be configured to be PDH only, SDH only or ATM only with or without jitter generation and measurement.
The HP 37717B monochrome version (with internal 24-column printer) provides a budget solution. The more powerful HP 37717C has color display and optional graphics printer.
Use the HP 37717B to perform in-service non-intrusive monitoring of live traffic, test network protection switching mechanisms, perform out-of-service BER measurements. Functionally test PDH/SDH multiplexers, regenerative repeaters, digital cross connects etc. as well as ATM switches, routers and rate converters. Stress network elements by performing frequency offset, auto-jitter tolerance, auto-jitter transfer and output jitter measurements to ITU-T recommendations. Important parametric tests such as protection switch times, frequency, delay and optical power measurement are also supported.

SDH Frame formats: STM-4, STM-1 to ITU-T G.707, STM-0 to ITU-R F.750. Payloads: ITU-T G.707 (140 Mb/s, DS3, 34 Mb/s, 2 Mb/s, DS1 and C-4, C-3, C-2, C-12 bulk-filled) Drop/insert: 140 Mb/s, 34 Mb/s and 2 Mb/s to/from SDH signal. Clock sources Internal: Accuracy +/- 4.5 ppm. Offset: Range +/- 999 ppm. External: 2 Mb/s / 2 MHz MTS signal, received STM-4, STM-1 and STM-0 signal. Connectors Optical: Customer exchangeable range of adaptors (FC/PC, DIN47526, ST, Biconic, NEC D4, SC, HMS-10/HP). Electrical: BNC or small Siemens on all transmit/receive and drop/insert ports except STM-1/STM-4 NRZ which is SMA. Interfaces Optical: 622 Mb/s, 155 Mb/s (1310nm and 1550 nm). Electrical: 155 Mb/s (CMI), 52 Mb/s (B3ZS), STM-1/STM-4 NRZ (ECL). Error addition and detection: A1A2 frame, B1, B2, MS-FEBE, HP B3, HP FEBE, HP IEC, LP B3/BIP-2, LP FEBE, payload bit errors. Alarm generation and detection: LOS, LOF, OOF, MS AIS, MS FERF, HP AIS, HP FERF, HP LOP, HP unequipped, LP AIS, LP FERF, LP LOP, LP unequipped, H4 LOM. Pointer sequences: Generation and analysis to ITU-T G.783. Protection switching: MSP linear messages to ITU-T G.783 and MSP ring architecture to ITU-T G.841 plus protection switch time measurement.

Payloads: Framed, unframed or structured (full mux-demux) with 64 kb/s and n x 64kb/s timeslot testing. Drop Insert: 2 Mb/s to/from 8 Mb/s, 34 Mb/s or 140 Mb/s signal. Clock sources Internal: Accuracy +/- 4.5 ppm. Offset: Range +/- 100 ppm. External: Received 2 Mb/s signal, external 2 Mb/s / 2 MHz MTS signal on jitter generator module, external clock input on PDH binary interface module. Connectors Electrical: BNC or small Siemens on all transmit/receive and drop/insert ports. Interfaces Electrical: 140 Mb/s (CMI), 34 Mb/s (HDB3), 8 Mb/s (HDB3/AMI), 2 Mb/s (HDB3/AMI). Error addition and detection: Code, frame, CRC4, REBE and payload bit errors. Alarm generation and detection: LOS, AIS, LOF, RAI, RMFAI, CASMFL.
JitterJitter can be added to and measured on PDH, SDH and ATM signal structures. Rates: STM-4o, STM-1o, STM-1e, 140 Mb/s, 34 Mb/s, 8 Mb/s and 2 Mb/s. Jitter and wander generation: Automatic jitter tolerance to ITU-T G.958 and G.823 with jitter and wander tolerance to ITU-T G.825. Jitter frequency range: 0.1 Hz to 5 MHz Jitter amplitude range: up to 200 UI Wander frequency range: 10 uHz to 0.125 Hz Wander amplitude range: up to 14 400 UI Jitter tolerance pass masks: ITU-T G.958 type A and B, ITU-T G.823 low Q and high Q. Jitter measurement: Peak-to-peak and rms output jitter and pointer jitter measurements with internal 12 kHz HP plus HP1, HP2 and LP filters to ITU-T O.171. Jitter transfer: Automatic jitter transfer with narrow bandwidth selective filtering to ITU-T G.823 and G.958. Jitter transfer pass masks: ITU-T G.958 type A and B, ITU-T G.823 low Q and High Q. Wander: Measurement 2 Mb/s wander measurement with time interval error, estimated frame slips, bit slips and implied frequency offset results.
ATM Frame formats: 2.048 Mb/s (E1): As per ITU-T G.804/G.704: 34.368 Mb/s (E3) and 139.264 Mb/s: As per IUT-T G.832; 155.52 Mb/s (STM-1), to ITU-T G.707.Foregrounnd VC payload: Cross cell PRBS (2^15 - 1, 2^23 - 1 to ITU-T 0.151). Single cell PRBS (2^9 - 1). User-defined byte repeated to fill cell payload (48 bytes). Test cell (to draft ITU-T O.191).
Error add and detection: E1: FAS, code, CRC-4, REBE. E3: code, BIP. STM-1: As per SDH Single HEC or double HEC Payload errors
Alarm generation and detection: Physical layer DS1: LOS, LOF, AIS, RAI. E1: LOF, AIS, RAI. E3: LOF, AIS, FERF. STM-1: As per SDH section.
ATM layer: VP-FERF/VP-ROI,VP-AIS, VC-FERF/VC-ROI. VC-AIS (all end-to-end) Continuity check: VP-CC, VC-CC.
Additional ATM layer alarms detected: Loss of cell sync, selected cell not received, congestion experienced, test cell loss, payload pattern loss, PM-OAM loss.
