The HP 81700 Series 200 remote fiber test system is a complete open system designed for telecom network operators. Its aim is to improve network quality and reduce downtime.

The HP 81700 Series 200 is based in an HP 9000 Series 700 HP-UX platform. The system is Open View-based and offers an unrivaled degree of openess. The HP 81700 can be operated as a standalone system, and easy integration into the operations-support systems environment also allows the system to be fully customized.

The Series 200 has improved OTDR measurement hardware, complete network control and enhanced remote fiber-testing system-manager software.

The system hardware consists of a cardcage that fits a central-office rack and provides various networking capabilities to access the remotely located measurement units. The measurement unit contains OTDR modules which are available of 1310 nm, 1550 nm, and 1625 nm wavelengths. With a choice of 29 dB to 40 dB dynamic range the most appropriate price/performance option for a particular application can be selected. Also, switch modules from 1 x 4 to 1 x 96 can be integrated into the same cardcage. The OTDR modules support both "dark" and "active" fiber testing.

A "manager" takes command of the entire remote-testing configuration and also can interface with the operations-support system of the network. It performs functions including trouble ticketing, fast alarming, geographic reference to events on the cable route, auto-configuring of measurement hardware, storing network maps, and establishing links to structured query language (SQL) relational databases. Remote fiber test systems improve network quality as they check fiber links automatically on a regular basis. Information is stored centrally allowing link degradations to be identified and located. This enables prompt action to be taken and so minimizes downtime.
