The HP B4600A system performance analysis (SPA) toolset for the HP 16505A prototype analyzer has been designed to profile the entire system at all levels of abstraction -- from signals to high-level code -- to clearly identify and optimize the components that affect the global behavior of your system.

The HP B4600A SPA toolset can be used during the entire prototyping phase of product design because it is based on the same HP logic analysis tools that you already use. Adding SPA is as simple as dragging and dropping an icon. In addition to performance analysis, it can be used at any time to test and document characteristics such as memory coverage and response time.

The software developer can use the HP B4600A SPA tool set to provide non-intrusive measurements of embedded code execution with full symbolic capabilities. The SPA tool set analyzes single or multiple-processor based systems based on CISC, RISC or DSP architectures. The tool set measurements do not change or effect your target system's behavior. No modification or recompilation of the code is required.

The hardware developer can use the HP B4600A SPA tool set to provide analysis and characterization of hardware components ranging from individual analog signals through complex system buses. The tool set recognizes stable or unstable events. The stability of a bus is determined by two or more consecutive acquisitions of the same data value on this bus, independent of its data value.

• Combine deep trace analysis with powerful real-time triggering, storage qualification and post-process data filtering to focus on just the view you need.

• Analyze the performance of your entire system by simultaneously viewing multiple SPA windows. Each SPA window includes filtering capabilities that enable you to concentrate on a specific event.

• Access the SPA toolset from workstations, X-Terminals or PCs running X11 emulation software, or use a SVGA monitor to control and view the measurements at your lab bench.

• Gain use of your design tools via the standard network capabilities of the HP 16505A prototype analyzer such as FTP, NFS, Telnet and X-Windows client/server

• The HP B4600A SPA toolset software and documentation are pre-installed and locked into the hard drive of the HP 16505A. By placing an order for the HP B4600A, you will get a password which allows you to immediately use the HP B4600A.

Measurement Configuration
Real time measurements:
These take place in the HP 165XX measurement module.  Sample rate, 
channel count, memory depth, and triggering can all be controlled by 
the user independently of the SPA toolset.

Data processing:
Software processing takes place in the HP 16505A prototype analyzer.

Accumulate mode:
The results of multiple measurements are summed and displayed by the 
SPA toolset.

State interval and time interval tools: 
No theoretical limit. 10,000 intervals (buckets) tested with a 
standard HP 16505A configuration.

State overview and time overview tools:
Number of buckets limited by the size of the display window

Time resolution and accuracy:
Dependent on the HP 165XX measurement module used

Accumulate mode:
No limit to the number of acquisitions made.  However, any modification 
of the display will cause the data to revert back to the last acquisition.

Other Product Characteristics:
Minimum, maximum, average, and standard deviation are displayed for each 
timing measurement.

Duration measurement of functions include function calls.

Data from any HP 16500 measurement module can be saved using the HP16505A 
file out tool.  Data can be recalled for later analysis using any SPA tool
Measurement results can be sorted by execution time or by event number.

All measurement modules supported by the HP 16505A can be used as 
data sources by the HP B4600A without modification.  The SPA toolset 
provides statistical representations of data captured by the 
measurement modules.
