HP E3472A Distributed Emulation for Hitachi SH7040 Series Microprocessor

In-circuit emulation technology has played a major role in the tremendous growth of embedded processor applications for many years. Now, however, as the embedded processor continues to evolve into ever more complex architectures running at faster speeds, conventional emulation architectures encounter some serious limitations. Conventional emulation architectures typically include processor run-control, real-time trace analysis, close links to a debugger interface, and memory substitution. Ideally, the emulator combines these elements into a probe that transparently replaces the target processor. New high speed CISC and RISC processors, with wide data buses, make the conventional approach difficult.

In addition, as the embedded processor applications become bigger and more complex, the project team also becomes bigger, and each engineer requires more specialized skills. Then each development tool has to fit a specific development task with the right function and offer a low cost. For instance, a high level C debugger is mandatory for application software engineers, but they don't need real-time bus analysis and time measurement capability. On the other hand, for firmware engineers, real-time bus analysis and time measurement capability are mandatory.
