BIOS has already been updated E. Multiple Updates F. Check for Year2000 Compliance G. Problems and error messages A. Purpose ========== You may own earlier versions of HP8147 / E4310A, which are not yet Year2000 compliant. OTDRs which are not compliant will be reset to 01April,1980 at millenium. Of course, also after millenium you can manually change the date using the user interface, but every time you recycle power the default date will be restored. Generally, mainframes E4310A with serial numbers DE35501422 and lower, manufactured before July, 1998 require an update. To make these products compliant, you do not need to return them to Hewlett-Packard. To update your HP8147 use the following instructions. B. Creating an Update Floppy ============================ 1. Download "8147y2k.img" to a directory on your PC (here called OTDR8147) 2. Download the utility "copydisk.exe" into the same directory Note: Download is done by: - move cursor to the required file - click right mouse button - on appearing menue, select "save link as ..." - then save file to the destination directory (here called OTDR8147) 3. Format a floppy disk (3.5", 1.44MB) on your PC Leave the floppy in the floppy disk drive of your PC (here assumed a:\) 4. Open DOS command window 5. Change into the directory where you have downloaded the files above (here OTDR8147) 6. Copy the image file to the floppy using the command copydisk.exe 8147y2k.img a: !!!Dot NOT use the "diskcopy.exe" command!!! 7. It is a good idea to attach an appropriate label on this Update Floppy disk. You can use the labels prepared on file y2k_lbl.sam. C. Update the HP8147 ==================== 1. Switch off the HP8147 2. Remove the OTDR module from the mainframe 3. Insert the Update Floppy disk into the floppy drive of the HP8147 4. Switch on the HP8147 The HP8147 will boot normally until the OTDR measurement sreen shows up. Then the software would access the floppy disk to start the update process. A message will be displayed: ************************************************ * 8147 BIOS Update Utility * ************************************************ * * Please turn off the OTDR, REMOVE measurement module if inserted * Then please turn on the OTDR, do NOT remove the floppy... 5. You must switch off the HP8147 6. Definitively make sure the OTDR module has been removed! If not yet done, remove it now. !! With the module inserted, the update process may fail !! 7. Make sure the Update Floppy disk is still in the floppy drive of the HP8147. 8. Switch on the HP8147 again The HP8147 will again boot as usual. After a few seconds, the new BIOS will be loaded. You can follow the load process which will take only 20 seconds. (In case the BIOS has already been updated earlier: see section D. below) After the BIOS has been updated you will be notified: ******************************************************** * 8147 BIOS Update Utility * ******************************************************** * * Operation completed * BIOS updated, this OTDR is year 2000 compliant * Please remove floppy, then cycle power... 9. Just remove the floppy 10. Switch off the HP8147 11. Reinstall the OTDR module to be prepared for new meaurements 12. Eventually, switch on the HP8147 for a measurement 13. It is a good idea now to mark your HP8147 as Year2000 compliant ====================================== D. BIOS has already been updated ================================ It is not a problem to run the update disk on an HP8147 which is already year 2000 compliant. The program automatically checks the status of the HP8147 BIOS: The process always starts with section C., steps 1. to 8. Then, after the second switch on, the program checks if the BIOS has already been updated. Eventually, the following message will be displayed: ************************************************ * 8147 BIOS Update Utility * ************************************************ * * Checking if BIOS is already up to date BIOSVER revision 1.0 success... BIOS is up to date, this OTDR is year 2000 compliant. Please remove floppy, then recycle power... 1. Just remove the floppy 2. Switch off the HP8147 3. Reinstall the OTDR module to be prepared for new meaurements 4. Eventually, switch on the HP8147 for a measurement E. Multiple Updates ================== Of course, you can use the Update Floppy disk multiple times to update any HP8147. Also, you may create several Update Floppy disks for distribution in your facility. F. Check for Year 2000 Compliance ================================= In case you have not marked your HP8147 as Year2000 compliant, you may check its status within seconds: 1. Switch on the HP8147 no matter if a module is inserted or not 2. Right after switch on, the first display will show: AMIBIOS (C)1992 American Megatrends Inc., ver: F361_210 The version F361_210 will tell you that this HP8147 is YEAR2000 compliant An HP8147 which has not been updated will show: AMIBIOS (C)1992 American Megatrends Inc., ver: F361_079 The version F361_079 will tell you that this HP8147 is not yet YEAR2000 compliant G. Problems and error messages ============================== In case you run into a problem, some error message occurs and your HP8147 cannot be updated, please send the unit to your nearest Hewlett Packard service center.
