** The Spirit of Christmas **
The spirit of Christmas is giving. Yes, for many people, Christmas is mostly about getting and hardly at all about giving, but then such people do not understand what makes Christmas an institution that is irrevocably tied to our culture and our religion. Furthermore, they do not EXPERIENCE Christmas as ordinary people do, because they do not realize that one cannot feel good about THINGS the way one can feel good about PERSONS. Or perhaps we should say that such people have long ago given up hope of feeling anything much about others aside of hurt, anger, hate and other negative emotions, because they have never learned how to live in the world and enjoy the good feeling that arises naturally among friends who understand the spirit of giving, and thus the spirit of Christmas.
There is, however, a certain error in saying that the spirit of Christmas is giving, because the spirit of Christmas is one that is most enjoyed and most appreciated when it is one's mindset every day of the year. Yes, Christmas is a special time of year when the Great Wheel in the Sky has reached its lowest ebb, when the temperature is the lowest and the days the shortest, and when the warmth of friendship and caring is most needed for the psychological Long Haul thru the dead winter months that precede the Spring. The spirit of Christmas is needed because human beings -- bluff and bluster as they may -- are fragile at their core, and need the warmth and touch of friendliness that comes from those around them.
But if the spirit of Christmas is giving, it is not the sort of mindless giving that breeds parasites, or invokes resentment from those unwilling or unable to accept the obligation of being gifted. It is rather a spirit of COMMUNICATION, in which we tell others that we are kind and caring, and that our intent is to let a small shaft of light into their life. Our gifts may be small or large, but our very best gift is our good feelings which the gift expresses -- a small piece of ourselves which can be appreciated because it is the genuine article.
But unfortunately, so many of us are insensitive to the spirit of Christmas because we are unable to walk a mile in others' shoes. For us, all too often, we are preoccupied with our money and our things and our little world, and can hardly spare a minute to realize that we are a part of the web of life which extends as an invisible bond connecting all men. It is true enuf that we cannot solve the world's problems by ourselves, but it is equally true that we can -- so to speak -- keep our own doorstep clean: We can embrace with the spirit of Christmas those who are our neighbors and associates, so that our little corner of the universe can be at ease and at rest and at peace. And if this is what everyone does, and not just ourselves, then that truly WILL solve the entire world's problems.
