ON VOTERS AND TAX PAYERS

Thanks Richard N

There are about 199 million voters in this country. Seventy million, or 35% of them, pay no federal income tax at all. These folk are net consumers of federal taxes collected. How do you think they vote--Republican?, Libertarian?--not a chance!

The remaining 129 million voters constitute 100% of the population that pays federal income taxes. Segmenting this group into the top 25% and the bottom 75%, reveals that 97 million voters make up the bottom 75% of income earners and they pay only 17% of federal taxes.

Adding the 97 million voters who pay 17% of federal income taxes to the 70 million voters who pay nothing, sums to 167 million voters out of the total of 199 million voters in the country.

This means that 84% of all voters only pay 17% of all income taxes collected. So, 83% of the federal income tax burden falls on 32 million Americans who make up only 16% of US voters.

Conclusions that can be drawn from this:

1. The voting population that shoulders the majority of the tax burden has the smallest voice on how their taxes are to be spent.

2. The voting majority has garnered to themselves disproportionate leverage and influence over the political process and could use that advantage an instrument to impose their will on those who really pay the bills--a TAIL WAGS DOG situation.

3. Suggests the thesis that perhaps people that do not pay any Federal taxes shouldn't be voting at all.
