With there being so many viewpoints on what scanners to run or not to run, I'm surprised that our ISP's do not offer virus or trojan scanning of messages passing through their servers. Perhaps they could have a virus wall to block incoming hostile attachments. I know this would be highly beneficial to them in public relations. They can install Carnivore to scan emails for criminal activity, so why can't they install an anti virus system to scan emails?
