  USNFUTIL (c) 1995 Bart Kamps & George Sobala
  version 1.1  11/june/1995

  for U.S. Navy Fighters v1.0 and v1.1

  U.S. Navy Fighters is copyrighted by Electronic Arts.

This is an utility to fly all the planes in USNF, and
to adjust the pilot files.

Make SURE you read the whole docs, including the bit
about "Hard Death(tm)".

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

INSTALLATION
============

Copy all the files to your USNF directory.
Start up with USNFUTIL

You have to make a full USNF install, the minimum install which loads a
lot of files from CD-ROM will not modifyable to fly all the planes.

For safety it's recommended to backup your pilot files: you'll only
have to backup the *.P files (ZIP them or copy them to an other directory)

This program's assumes that an EDIT program is in your path (usually
the DOS EDIT.COM program). Otherwise you won't be able to edit the
missions files by press F7 or F8 and viewing this readme by pressing
F1 in USNFUTIL. If you use another editor, your can create a EDIT.BAT
file including a line like this: CALL C:\PATH\MYEDITOR.EXE %1

This program comes with the following files:
  USNFUTIL.BAT - the batch file to start it USNFUTIL
  USNFUTI0.EXE   -  the main program
  USNFUTIL.TXT   -  this readme file

In its use, this program creates the following files:
  USNFUTI0.DAT - configuration file holding your cursor position
  USNFUTI0.BAT - temporary batch file to execute USNF and EDIT

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

DEINSTALLATION
==============

Delete the following files from your USNF directory: USNFUTI*.*

This utility modifies the files 5.LIB and 6.LIB.

They should still work normally for all other purposes. To restore your
USNF files to normal, press F5 in the menu.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

HOTKEYS
=======

The hotkeys from the menu are:
F1     -  view this file
F5 - restore 6.LIB and 5.LIB to original or modify those
           files again to allow you to fly all the planes
F10 - runs USNF, after quitting USNF you'll return to USNFUTIL
Ctrl-T -  shows the pilot's file number
Esc    -  quits USNFUTIL

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

MODIFYING USNF
==============

USNFUTIL will need to modify USNF to allow you to fly any plane.
When USNFUTIL is started, it detects if USNF is modified for this
or not. When not, you are prompted if you want USNFUTIL to modify
USNF. This modification can easily be undone by pressing F5 in
the main screen of USNFUTIL.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

ADJUST A MISSION FILE TO FLY ANY PLANE
======================================

FLY ANY PLANE IN USNF! Use for Quick and Pro missions.

You can now fly any plane or helicopter in USNF, Mig-29, B-52, whatever,
in Quick and Pro missions.

You get the correct flight-model, external views, weapons, radar, IR
capability. You get the cockpit art and HUD of the YAK-141 and Harrier.

This utility

(a) patches the USNF file 6.LIB to allow the new plane to work.

(b) creates the mission file for you containing the plane of
        your choice.

How to use it.
--------------

(i) Create a mission using the Pro Mission builder and save it - e.g.
call it CAS-1. Don't bother enabling the "choose a plane" button - this
would prevent you flying the plane of your choice, and so USNFUTIL will
automatically detect this and delete it from the mission file.

(ii) Exit USNF and select the mission from the menu and select a plane
from the list.

The utility will modify your mission file. If you choose
to edit this mission again in USNF, you'll find no player-plane in
the mission: the plane you're able to fly (p.e. a Mig-29) will then
have a computer pilot.

(iii) Start up USNF again and load up your mission "Load Single
Mission" button -and away you go!

Hint: you can quickly jump to a mission past all the built-in
missions by pressing the first letter of the name.

To switch planes, go back to step ii.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

ZERO YOUR MISSION FAILURES IN YOUR CAMPAIGN BEFORE YOU'RE SACKED
================================================================

Select the pilot from the pilot's list, and select the
"zero mission failures" line from the submenu.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

LOAD ALL ARMAMENT WHEN YOU'RE A BIT SHORT
=========================================

At the end of your campaign you might have used up some of your
favourite missiles. Select the pilot from the pilot's list
and select "make all armament available". The stock will be
just like the stock where you started the campaign with.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

SELECT ANY MISSIONS FROM THE UKRAIN 1995 CAMPAIGN
=================================================

Select the pilot from the pilot's list, and select the
"select any mission" line from the submenu. A list of
all 50 missions from the Ukrain campaign will be shown.
Select the mission you want to fly. The number of succeeded
missions will be altered to one less the mission you want
to fly. P.e. if you want to fly mission 36, your pilot
will have succeeded 35 missions according to USNF.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

FLY ANY PLANE IN THE UKRAIN 1995 CAMPAIGN
=========================================

Fly any plane in a campaign! This always uses one special pilot file
PLT100.P (which has been doctored to add all extra weapons). This pilot
file will be marked in the list with a #. If no PLT100.P pilot exists
you can select any pilot to fly any plane in the campaign (USNFUTIL
will rename this pilot to PLT100.P).

You will find the extra plane towards the left of the Ike's deck.
(On the plane selection screen it will look like a YAK141 or AV8.)

Only some extra planes are "carrier capable" and behave entirely as you
would expect. These are the AV8, A6, EA6, E2, F18C, SU27 and YAK141. In
addition the KA50 and SH60 will operate from the carrier, but your
wingman will not follow you.

The two planes that are fully implemented are the AV8 and the YAK141.
The SU27 is nearly the same as the SU33 and the EA6 and E2 are not
usuable to fight. So you best select the AV8 or the YAK141.

For _all_ other, non carrier capable, planes: BEWARE OF THE FOLLOWING:

* When you try to launch from the carrier, the carrier moves out from
under you. (kinda unnerving <g>). Have your afterburners on full as you
start the mission.

* Your wingman never launches. He just dives into the soup and sits
there.

* You can't land on the carrier as no hook is available. Anyway, you
just crash.

And best of all.......

* 'Hard Death (tm)' - when you die, your computer dies. Perhaps you will
treat ACM with more respect from now on? You get a big error message and
then BOOM.  Nothing.

* The mission may also terminate abruptly just as you complete your
objectives. You will need to reset your computer at this point.

This is an unavoidable feature - USNF just doesn't like these non-
carrier planes and bombs out. So select the YAK141 or AV8 Harrier
to be your additional aircraft in the campaign.
(The AV8 has a very big gun that goes boom-boom-boom-boom-boom!)

------------------------------------------------------------------------

KNOWN PROBLEMS
==============

When you use this utility to fly all the planes and you modify
the files 5.LIB and 6.LIB, some of the standard single missions
will not display with their full mission name, but instead
with the filenames, "extra01", "extra02", etc. This is because
USNFUTIL replaces the (not necessary) mission briefings with
stuff that is necessary to fly any plane. Although I could
fix this problem by restructuring the .LIB files, it's too
much work for too little result. The problem is not that
important anyway, everything works fine. You can always restore
to the original USNF by pressing F5 in USNFUTIL. The full
mission names will then be displayed again, but of course
you can't fly all the planes anymore. You can just switch
between the modified and original USNF by pressing F5.
