Linux executable strings modification

Hi everyone, I have a linux executable which contains some strings I can see with the linux strings utility. What I want to do is to modify some of these strings, with strings which won't always have the same length. Is there a simple way to do that ? Please note that i'm fairly new to reverse engineering, but under windows I used reshacker to edit strings in executables, so maybe there's such a tool under linux :)
