How can I found out what protection a usb dongle has?

My mom bought some usb dongle that contains a tv program. I am guessing the tv program reads the usb dongle to match some serial number that is hidden because the tv program won't work without it.

I want to be able to emulate the dongle that way I dont need the dongle on the computers.


So I am guessing my first step is to figure out what type of protection it uses
