What do you think it will happen if somebody will discover how to factor the prime numbers (strait forward using an algebra equation regardless of the key size) and dump down the tube all the modern cryptography foundation?
Maybe will have a nice funeral with the money from RSA challenge price :lol:

I think that the switch to other forms of cryptographic protection not relying on primes would be extremely quick. With public/private rsa implementations down the worlds financial sector wouldn't waste much time.

To be honest I don't think the result would be very ground breaking as SHA-1 could have a few years ago been posed with the same question. I'm no crypto expert though and didn't follow SHA-1.

How do we know they haven't ? Maybe not so straight forward. Maybe quite involved.
Also maybe not regardless of key size, maybe only to say 256 characters in reasonable time.

"They" might keep that a secret. Remember when DES got cracked ? "They" didn't seem surprised.
