It has been some time since my last post on this board, though Git has been doing a great job of daily moderation. This board is growing daily though with the growth in popularity, we're always constantly dealing with spam, and management of quality within the forums.

Effective about 5 minutes ago, we've decided to try closing new registrations for the board for the next 30 or so days to see how it goes. We may move to an invite only model, or some other hybrid, though we welcome your feedback.

The purpose of this move is to further increase the quality of content on this board for active members, and continue to provide a forum for exchange of information.

I think that temporarily closing new registrations will give us a good glimpse as to whether this is the right move or not.

cheers,

DR

thankx admin i feel this is right move. Many peoples use rubbish language bad words and when banned register with different username.
Hopefully this wll stop them.

To put it in perspective, up until yesterday there were over 12000 users who had not posted in over 2 years, most of who had never posted. We have had a large number of 'users' who join, post spam (which gets deleted) and sit there. We're better at banning those people within hours now but the number of spammers has got out of hand, so we need this break to catch our breath and decide on a better long term way of handling it.

Nobody wants the board to suffer and that will be forefront in any decisions made.

It's an interesting decision but I'm not sure it's the right one. New members were the ones asking interesting questions and exhibiting interesting problems. Af if there are no interesting problems, why would old members stay here? :)

I believe there are 2 problems with the board:
1) automated registrations + spam being sent later;
2) low quality of the new member posts;

To solve #1 you can add some custom fields/JavaScript/Captcha in the registration form, that would defeat 90+% of all spambots.

To solve #2 admins would have to be much more strict against posters that generate useless content.
Example A - repeated crack requests, absolutely no interest to learn:
http://reteam.org/board/showthread.php?t=4412
http://reteam.org/board/showthread.php?t=4478
http://reteam.org/board/showthread.php?t=4536
Example B - trivial questions and/or irrelevant comments
http://reteam.org/board/showthread.php?t=4437
http://reteam.org/board/showthread.php?t=4541

My 2 cents,
kao.

Much more strict? Are you serious?. You've pointed out 3 that I missed out of the thousands that get zapped. Were human I'm afraid.

Yes, I'm serious. But that's only my opinion, based on my experience at Exelab and Wasm. :)

Registration at Exelab requires answering several questions about reversing and about board rules. As a consequence, total newbies and spambots are not able register.
Also they have subforum for newbie questions. Asking such questions outside of that subforum lead to immediate unpleasant consequences. The approach might seem a little radical at first but (in my opinion) that's the reason why they are not swamped with questions that can be answered in 1 minute using Google search.

Dear demigods,
it's been 2 months since you disabled new user registrations. In your initial post you said that the restriction will last "30 days or so".

Have you decided in which direction this board will move and what model for new users you will adopt? Would you mind sharing that strategy will us?

Sincerely yours,
kao.

Thanks kao for your feedback and insight. We plan to update the board software in the next little while to support some of the features you are talking about. Time is a challenge, but once the upgrades are completed, we should be all set.

I'll review exe and wasm, as well as rce and some of the others to see what everyone is doing beforehand.

Git is right that we have implemented lots of spam protection on the current sign up, though we were dealing with mass amounts of sign up and posting spam before closing new registrations. Then once closed, many dormant accounts took a while to clean out. We're confident that we have it all cleaned up now, but whatever next steps we take will take a bit of time to implement so we only do it once.

cheers,

Hi! to everybody:

I just want to thank you all for the guidance and patience with the newbies like me, this is A VERY GOOD SITE!!! AND I ADMIRE YOU ALL MASTERS FOR THE KNOWLEDGE ON PROGRAMMING YOU HAVE!!!, this is my very first post, but i`ve been around for a while...silently learning from Masters while spreading the word trough the threads; i preferred that, than posting something stupid because of my little knowledge on programming!!!
I came to this forum because i had a problem: Some time ago i'd lost a USB Sentinel SuperPro Hardware key that belonged to the company i work for... a new one was bought lately but every time i requested it to do my JOB, my boss gave me a preach so i started searching... trying to get rid of the damn hardware key and "ease the pain it gave me"; thatīs how I came across this forum and started learning from it. I tried for weeks, committing mistakes from information posted... but with patience and your guidance i was able to remove the Sentinel SuperPro using Multikey, and later i was able to remove A HASP HL.

MY RESPECT, ADMIRATION AND GRATEFULNESS TO THE MASTERS: CODERS/REVERSERS/PROGRAMMERS/ADMINS ON THIS SITE AND THE PEOPLE THAT POSTED THEIR DOUBTS. I will try to be a more active member from now on.
