I am new to this forum; I take the forum admin sticky at his word - I just joined and am going to participate.

My current project is dongle emulation of Sentinel USB Dongle. Last year, I purchased progam ($30,000 USD) for my business. I have a comp-sci/programming background, but am years out of practice doing low level work (modula-2, c++, pascal, cobol, LISP, etc.)

According to various dongle emulation websites, I find only one here in US that "feels" legitimate. I've spoken to the individual, but I find his $3000.00 price a bit steep.

I am not trying to "hack" the key, I simply want my investment protected. If the key is stolen, for example, my vendor wants $5000.00 to replace it. I understand about intellectual property and such, but I did buy the application, have no intention of using is beyond the scope of my purchase. I obviously find great value in the application - it has allowed much greater productivity in my business.

Another application I purchased, for roughly the same $$ uses software based protection, which I vastly prefer (not that I find any protection especially palatable).

So, given the hideous price for 1) paying a 3rd party to "emulated my dongle", or 2) paying the more hideous price if the physical key is stolen, I find I want to "dust-off" my rusty skills and try to emulate the key myself.

I searched the web, and, fortunately, found this forum. You all are very knowledgeable and I think I would be comfortable here.

Some additional information - the key (Sentinel Super Pro USB) is attached to my server; the applicaton is installed on the server, then client apps are installed FROM the server to the various workstations. I have 2 con-current user license, which is adequate for my needs; Last year, I purchase a separate stand alone key for use on my laptop. It's a partial set of the main application - it was "only" $2500; would have been $4000 with all features unlocked - which I don't really need on the laptop.

Hope I haven't been too long-winded; just pleased to find a group I feel I could have common interests with.

One final questions - the RapidShare file sharing that so many of you like to use - I have never heard of before. Why do you use it? Are there security advantages, speed or monetary reasons? I have no problem signing up and paying the yearly fee - just wanted some more information before doing so.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions on where to begin my project and about the file sharing service.

If all what did you write is right you can use any of commercial backup service like SafeKey (Canada). Their prices are quite reasonable:

Thanks - safe-key is one I hadn't found during my searches. The guy I spoke to (Spectrum Software - www.donglefree.com) has a good reputation, but, his pricing is astronomical.

Again, thanks for the heads up and check pm from me.

Now, if I wanted to unlock a few additional features, just for my own amusement.....
